A health promotional day

Health Promotion is the latest thing. It is something we nurses are always supposed to be doing. So, in honor of health promotion, I actually flossed my teeth. I intend to do this on a daily basis but somehow, I just can’t. The road to edentation is paved with ….. etc. However, since I actually was going to the dentist, I was reminded and inspired to floss. So I did it out of vanity rather than virtue. Does it still count? What is it that makes this simple task so impossible? Here are Joan, my dental hygienist for at least twenty years, and my mouth which she has so vigilantly nurtured over that span. She is trying to look ominous, but she is too nice. On the walk to the dentist, I walked past this really ugly bit of public art and these cute flowers.

Now why did my stomach lurch at this post? I'll tell you why: I did NOT floss enough and poverty prevented me going to regular serious cleanings and placque removal for my teeth.
Which is why I now only have six and two of those are living on the edge!
OY!

Well, unfortunately, if one has not been flossing enough, then right before seeing the dentist is NOT the best thing to do... My dental hygienist told me so! She said all it does is make your un-flossed gums more likely to bleed during the cleaning! With this in mind, I usually try to floss more often starting about a month before I go in. This turns out to be much better embarrassment lessening strategy! ~~~ I like the geometric rock things... I don't see the ugliness from your picture. Where is it? :-)

I like that public art too! And if you floss every two or three days at least it gets to be less trouble--just keep your dental floss right out by your toothbrush!

My favorite flossing trick: Keep the floss and brush in the shower. I don't seem to mind doing it if it gives me an excuse to stay in the warm water for a few more minutes! :-)
